Ruth Sumner grew up in Otahuhu where she did all the usual things for a child of the 60’s and 70’s. After Ruth’s first marriage failed in the early 80’s she entered Auckland Uni where she studied Psychology and Education and later worked at HELP in central Auckland. In 1997 Ruth returned to study at MIT’s School of Visual Arts majoring in painting and printmaking and then went on to complete an MA in Art and Design at AUT in 2002. For the next 20 years she lived and practiced art in Dairy Flat surrounded by native bush. In 2019 Ruth and her husband moved to Helensville attracted by the vibrant arts culture nurtured by the area. She works in oils, acrylics and spray paint to create abstract paintings and prints centred around ideas of inclusiveness, spiritual otherness and belonging.
