Bernette is the sixth generation of her family to be born in and live in Te Awaroa / Helensville. While at North Shore teacher’s College she studied art and completed several art teaching papers at ACE. Over the years she has enjoyed working in glass work, flax weaving, clay work, wood and stone carving. Bernette began exhibiting in the Ngati Whatua Toi Kaipara exhibition in 2009 with her paintings on large timber slabs and large multimedia installations. Currently she is continuing her ‘Our Special Places’ series in acrylic on canvas which cover the whole of the Kaipara area. Places of interest are mainly of historical and local significance and range from historic homes and churches to pa sites and shipwrecks. Bernette’s popular local images are printed onto tiles so that everyone can enjoy them. She has a range of items available including tiles, mugs, coasters, cheeseboards, purses, keyrings and pendants. Now retired, she has time to paint and enjoys taking commissions of the special places of others
