Bernette is the sixth generation of her family to be born in and live in Te Awaroa/Helensville and is of Ngati Whatua descent. Her interest in the history of the South Kaipara area has resulted in her many paintings of historical and local significance and range from historic homes and churches to pa sites and shipwrecks. These popular local images have been printed onto a range of items including tiles, mugs, coasters and cheeseboards which are sold locally. Bernette is currently working on large timber slabs incorporating Maori design into her landscapes. Her works of the Northern Kaipara area can be seen in the Tika Pono Toi Gallery in Dargaville.
